Alumni Memories

At the 2009 Alumni Day we asked attendees to answer the following two questions. What is your favorite memory of camp and how did attending camp change your life? Here's what they had to say!

Larry was a camper starting in 1954 and says his time at Camp “Never Ends."

What was your favorite memory?

I need to write a book...There was a boy from Duxbury Stockade who had muscles that were bigger than my legs.  We were playing baseball against their team and I was intimidated.  He was an all-star player, and during that game he hit the ball and it went so far.  I ran, ran, ran, ran...  Then, I put my glove up and caught the ball – I was a hero!

How did it change your life?

Camp did not change my life, camp shaped my professional life.  We were safe there.  We learned how to work with people.  Camp created a place where we could be ourselves.  Now, I work with teenagers and talk to them and work to create a safe environment for them.

Rick was a camper in the 1960s.  As a child growing up in Revere, he said that Camp got him off the streets.

What was your favorite memory?

My favorite memory of camp was Christmas in July.  One year a counselor was using an axe to cut down a tree and hit a bee hive; everyone around ran into the lake.

How did it change your life?

The changes that camp offered me started with Dick Gavoni.  After a heartfelt talk, I grew to admire Dick.  At Camp, we learned respect and manners, and he along with the other campers came to know that this was “their camp.”

Kerin was a camper from 1994 to 2006

What was your favorite memory?

My favorite memory is going white water rafting.  I had never been before and it was so much fun.

How did it change your life?

I am so open minded and ready for anything.  Camp taught me to be confident and do the right thing.
