Festivities got off to a raucous start with the traditional Canoe Challenge, which pitted current Wing staff members against the more seasoned alumni crew. The alumni boat handily won this year’s contest…(while sadly the staff team managed to capsize their canoe for the umpteenth year in a row!)
For all in attendance, the highlight of the day’s activities was the presentation of the the 2011 Richard E. Gavone Alumni of the Year Award to Steve Goveia for his long and dedicated service to campers and staff at Camp Wing. Speeches given by Crossroads’ Executive Director, Deb Samuels, current Camp Wing Director Pat Cleary and alumni extraordinaire Joe Kintigos articulated the passion and commitment to youth that Steve brought with him to Crossroads and how his influence remains strong to this day. The ceremony was rounded out by all the current Wing campers showing off some of the things they do best- singing and dancing!
Following the award presentation was an enormous and delicious barbecue and open games time for all kids and alumni. It was a perfect end to a wonderful day- everyone making new friends and renewing old friendships outside on a beautiful afternoon in Duxbury.
