2011 Crossroads C5 Road to College Tour!

Type:  Coverage

Each summer, teens in the 4th year of Crossroads’ C5 Teen Leadership program, the Compass class, embark on a week-long New England college tour. This year our students visited 8 colleges over 6 days and for some it was their first time ever stepping on a college campus. They embraced a whirlwind of new experiences, learning about the application and financial aid process, sleeping in dorm rooms and eating in dining halls, but most importantly, they saw clearly how college could be a reality for them in their lives.

C5 Teens, Always Holding Themselves to a Higher Standard
The assistant admissions director at Westfield State University had this to say about our teens: “you were probably the best group to whom we have ever given our special group visit tour. The students were attentive, polite, they listened, and they had a ton of great questions!”

The 2011 Compasses visited Clark University, Nichols College, UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Springfield College, Westfield State University, Wheelock College, and Harvard University. We are grateful to all participating schools for being such gracious and informative hosts and especially to Nichols, Springfield, Westfield, and Wheelock for hosting our group overnight!

In addition to attending admission and financial aid seminars, our students were able to meet members of the undergraduate community at each school to get a taste of what real student life is like- right down to what kind of food is available in the dining halls! One of the students had an insightful look at college and personal responsibility: “College has challenged me to think about my goals and how my actions help or hurt my goals.”

The action-packed week ended in a ceremony at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, which gave the teens an opportunity to reflect on what they had just experienced and share their new perspectives with their communities. Deb Samuels, Crossroads’ Executive Director, called the college tour closing ceremony one of her favorite days of the year: in the space of one afternoon you can see our teens becoming the “incredible leaders of the future” we know they will be.

Congratulations to the 2011 Compasses on a wonderful tour! We can’t wait to see where they go next!

Watch the full closing ceremony here, complete with amazing teen and staff speeches!
