Downtown Boston is packed with incredible things: food, art, centers of business and government, and tons of college access resources! On Saturday, May 14, our C5 Hammer class (10th graders) completed an AMAZING RESOURCE RACE that guided them to several major college access resources and encouraged them to have fun and learn about their host city along the way. Our teens trekked from Posse on Franklin Street to TERI at the Boston Public Library and finally to Access Boston just off the Public Gardens. A Crossroads for Kids staff member was stationed at each site to talk to the teens about the resources available to them and make sure they all know where to go to take advantage of the assistance available to them!
In preparation for the College Tour that this group will be making around New England this summer, our goal is to familiarize the teens with places that will be helpful to them, in addition to Crossroads, in the process of applying to colleges or finding other post-secondary opportunities. Some of the featured resources include free help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), databases of scholarship opportunities, and one-on-one professional guidance through myriad college major choices or career opportunities!
In addition to having the teens visit those 3 major resources, they also had a checklist of things they should find on the way to each location, which focused on learning random historical facts about Boston and also uncovering clues that lead them to various Boston colleges (Berklee, Northeastern, NE College of Photography, 6 Colleges on the Fenway, etc.) where they had to find a student that attended one of those and do a mini interview. Each group also participated in an activity which encouraged them to hand out brochures about Crossroads and share their experiences in the program and what they learned Saturday about college access resources.
