Teens in the last year of the C5 Teen Leadership Program, the Medallions, spend their time at Camp Lapham beginning to plan a capstone service trip that they will take in April of their senior year of high school (for info about last year’s trip to TN, check this out!)
One of the issues this group of 2012 Medallions is passionate about is homelessness: who it affects, what the effects are, and what they can do about it. To learn more, they participated in a workshop at Horizons for Homeless Children in Roxbury, which taught them about the particular risks associated with homelessness in very young children- birth through 5 years old. After the workshop, our group spent the rest of the afternoon helping clean up some playgrounds the group uses.
![]() An important program element at Horizons for Homeless Children is creating and maintaining these Playspaces, where kids can go to just be kids! HHC creates fun, nurturing environments where children can learn to play, share, read, and enjoy exploring their surroundings. They also help parents learn how to be nurturing and involved in the growth and development of their children, and provide guidance for job training programs, GED programs and college access materials. They aim to stabilize entire families to break the cycle of homelessness.
Our teens came away from their day at HHC with a better understanding of what kinds of programs are out there to help families dealing with homelessness, and how they can contribute to the success of those programs. It was a great day for all participants, and we can’t wait to see what these teens will choose for their own service project!
