On June 26th, 35 of our amazing staff from Camp Mitton spent a morning volunteering with the Nauset Youth Alliance to build a community garden at the Eddy Elementary School!
To kick off the summer on the right foot, the Camp Mitton staff training includes a volunteer service day where the staff can come together as a team and really get into the Crossroads spirit of giving back and making an impact in other's lives. This year the staff chose to partner with NYA on this important project. Jesse Librot of Camp Mitton says that their experience volunteering that June morning has stayed with them throughout the summer: “We definitely got so much out of building the garden together, as I hope you and your kids will for years to come.”
The garden has been a huge success this summer: Lisa Still of NYA tells us that “it is overflowing with tomatoes, pickling cucumbers and bok choy!”
To get the garden plant-ready, the team from Mitton helped relocate sod, build raised beds, and fill the beds with soil. It was an exhausting work-load, but the team knocked it out of the park with great energy and commitment. For photos of the process and finished project, check out the NYA Facebook album.
Nauset Youth Alliance is an ideal service partner for Crossroads for Kids. The Alliance provides a safe and enjoyable environment for school aged youth to build friendships, play games and sports, work on homework and engage in a wide variety of creative and enriching activities. NYA is a great alternative to children going home alone at the end of the school day and provides services for children of parents or guardians who are working, attending school or interested in enrichment.
