Crossroads Leads at MLK Day of Service Event

Type:  Coverage

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Crossroads for Kids participated in a Day of Service and Leadership at Northeastern University. The service event was organized by the Massachusetts Promise Fellows program, and Crossroads’ group was headed by our own Fellow (and alumni), Diandra Butner (second from left).

The team from Crossroads started the day on a high note by leading all participants in a round of Rock Paper Scissors Entourage, a favorite team-building activity, and teaching everyone a classic camp song, Bazooka Bubble Gum. Crossroads teen Philip noted that “public speaking was definitely a factor. Without Crossroads pushing me to step out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t have been able to help run the opening activity and I had fun doing it.”

With the crowd warmed up, everyone launched into the wide variety of service projects planned for the day. Crossroads teens and staff participated in painting murals for a Boston elementary school to bring some excitement to their classrooms and hallways, as well as creating some books for senior citizens to use when volunteering with children who are learning to read. (Check out photos of their projects here!) Our group was also able to join a session where Mass Promise Fellows brainstormed how to create community organizations in their home communities, and participated in a strategic planning process focused on their experiences with Crossroads.

The teens who were able to join Crossroads at the event had a great time, and got some important insights into community service. Cory said that “Crossroads prepares us with the skills to do community service, and stepping out of our comfort zones to what we’re doing today is similar to what we will do on our [senior capstone] service trip.” Domonique really appreciated the opportunity to practice “a lot of teamwork- we all had to work together to complete each service project.”

The Massachusetts Promise Fellows wanted everyone to think about MLK Day not as a day off, but another day ON. It was a great opportunity for Crossroads teens and staff to shine as team-builders and community leaders!
