Crossroads Rising Seniors Preparing for College

Type:  Coverage

On Friday August 19th, 15 members of our rising high school seniors, the Crossroads C5 Medallion Class of 2012, spent the afternoon in one-on-one college counseling sessions thanks to the generosity of  Sidney McClure and her colleagues at College Counseling Partners.  Many thanks to Sidney, Cheri Bard and Gail O’Toole who shared their time and talents with our teens!

Each teen received 20 minutes of private counseling with one of the advisors. In that private session, the advisors took the time to get to know each teen and draw out their individual skills and interests so that each teen left with a list of at least 10 schools they felt would be a good fit for them. Every student came away with a list of reach, probable and safety schools and a plan to get from list to application to enrollment!

Additionally, all the teens participated in small group activities, which covered topics from the timeline of college and financial aid applications this coming fall to starting to fill out the Common Application, a free application used by over 400 colleges and universities. They also spent some time talking about financial aid and gearing up for workshops with some of our other partners, such as ACCESS, in the coming months.

Some of the teens even brought sample essays they had prepared for review, and the advisors were thrilled by their initiative. Going forward, the Crossroads staff will be on call to review essays and applications, provide strong references, give guidance on the financial aid process (and nominate them for scholarships!) and provide general moral support in what is an incredibly exciting time for these teens.

Our most recent graduates from the program are headed to their schools (check out their college wall!) in the coming weeks, and we know these current Crossroads C5 Medallions are on track to follow in their impressive footsteps!
