Farewell to a Beloved Alumnus

Type:  Coverage

It is with great sadness that we  say farewell to a beloved Crossroads Camp Wing Alumnus, Mr. Paul Poirier who passed away last month.  Affectionately known as Mr. P. around these parts, Paul was an incredible mentor for hundreds of young kids and teens who came to Camp Wing during his tenure as the Camp Wing Baker from 1960 through 1987.

A World War II Veteran, Mr. P. served as a baker in the United States Army, during which time he rose to fame as a personal favorite of the First Lady Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt who would specifically request Mr. P’s pastries. After the War Mr. P. opened Poirier’s Bakery in Kingston, Massachusetts before becoming the official baker for Duxbury Public Schools which then led him to Crossroads and Camp Wing.

In 2007 Mr. P. was presented with the Richard E. Gavone Alumni of the Year Award at Crossroads for Kids in recognition of the support, encouragement and love he shared with hundreds of Camp Wing students not only during his time as the Camp Wing baker, but in his many visits since he retired. His kindness and genuine commitment to the success of Massachusetts children will never be forgotten.

Farewell Mr. P., you will be missed.
