Larry Allen, Crossroads Alum Honored

Type:  Coverage

Crossroads for Kids is so pleased to congratulate our alum Larry Allen for being awarded the Newton Youth Commission Service Award!

Larry shared with us that his passion for youth and service began during his time at Camp Wing, which he started attending at age 7. One of his greatest role models is his camp mentor, Phil Petrella (a recipient of our Dick Gavone Alumni of the Year Award!), who taught Larry how to see the best in each child and help each individual feel important.

Larry carried these lessons with him even after he left Crossroads Camp Wing. He went to Virginia State College and dove straight into service, developing and coordinating a program in which college students worked with economically disadvantaged youth helping them develop personal, academic and social resources. He continued in school to earn a Masters’ Degree in Counseling from Antioch College, while spending his summers in Boston supervising teenagers in a work program sponsored by anti-poverty agencies.

Now at Newton North, Larry is a full-time counselor aiming to help each student find the best in themselves, as Phil Petrella showed him so long ago. He was given the Newton Youth Commission Service Award for his work “tirelessly leading and mentoring young people” to honor his dedication, passion and advocacy. We at Crossroads would like to join our voices to the chorus thanking Larry for his long and fruitful commitment to youth!
